Choreo Hex Cards
Choreo Hex Cards are a unique resource for dance teachers to develop students' understanding of the elements of dance and improve their choreography skills. It's super easy to play, very versatile and students love it!
Each 80-card set has a base deck with three different types of cards - movement, body base and quality - and an extension deck with a further three types of cards that add a layer of technical language over top - stage orientation, direction of movement, and tempo. These are colour-coded for ease of use.
The main part of the base deck is the 47 different Movement vocabulary cards, deliberately designed using terminology that is independent of a single dance style to make the cards accessible to all students. Body base and quality add depth to these movements or you can add the extension deck to increase technical knowledge.
In the extension deck, orientation cards use theatre stage directions alongside a diagram to help develop contextual knowledge, while tempo cards use Italian music terminology (with translations) to create cross art-form links. Direction cards use ballet French terms (with translations) to build genre specific knowledge.
The hexagon shape comes from the SOLO Taxonomy and allows connections between cards to be made easily. This shape helps students to see how movements can flow into and out of one another, while sharing certain features. The cards could be used as a prompt for creating choreography, to further develop existing choreography or to analyse choreography. The possibilities are endless!
